Gathering New Ideas: Local Shop Offers Regional, Handmade Items  by Katie Demeria

When shoppers enter Gathered, they are stepping into the idea that has been in Cadyn Speziale's head for almost 10 years. "Every once in a while it hits me, and I stop and think, 'Wow, I'm actually doing this,'" she said. Speziale opened Gathered at a small location on Church Street in April 2013. Last spring she moved into her current location, which is about 700 square feet, at 413 East Main St. She worked in a similar boutique in Savannah, Georgia, after graduating from college, and when she settled in Front Royal still had the idea of opening her own store. Now she supports the work of more than 70 regional artists, offering both local residents and visitors the opportunity to keep a piece of the area with them...

The Valley Today: Valley Women Today  interview by Eka Kapiotis

A self-described “sponge for creative energy,” Cadyn Speziale was not satisfied with simply surrounding herself with art at home. She decided to create a gathering of carefully curated, artfully handcrafted goods from around the area and make them available to lucky shoppers on Main Street. A very interesting and diverse collection of jewelry, accessories, apparel, photographs, note cares, prints, and other small-scale art is available at the aptly named “Gathered.” This is not your ordinary gift store!

Why Town Code 110-17 Should Be Repealed Or Kept  by Roger Bianchini

Identifying herself as owner of the crafts shop "Gathered" on East Main Street in Front Royal, Speziale began by observing, "I opened my shop last spring as a way to help cultivate the diverse artistic talent in and around Front Royal; to support the local economy; and to give locals and visitors a unique place for gifts. I love out community and I love supporting it. But if I had been met with the same kind of groundless derogation as stated in Code 110-17 upon starting my business, I probably would have felt instantly defeated and closed my shop doors... So my gratitude goes out to everyone fighting to repeal this code. It takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you feel is right and to promote tolerance, especially in the face of opposition. As a Main Street business owner I would personally welcome any business that brings cultural diversity to our town...

Welder-Turned-Sculptor Shapes Metal Into Art  by Jeb Inge

Using old metal found in countless random places (he has yet to use a manhole cover he found on a worksite in Warrenton), Urbanksi creates a variety of work, from the life-sized statue of a couple, to desk items like an Atlas-inspired stick figure with the world on his shoulders. He sells many such items on consignment at stores in Front Royal...

Gathered: An Artisan Shop Supporting Handmade!     by Kathleen Lange Klik

Local Art, Crafts Finds Its Niche at 'Gathered' in Front Royal     by Carol Ballard

Just a short walk off East Main Street, Front Royal, and around the corner on Church Street, is a gem of a store called "Gathered." The shelves and walls in the three-month-old shop are full of colorful, well-displayed and exquisite items, but it may not be evident at first that they hold only artwork from local artists and craftspersons...
